Communication & Public Speaking for Leaders

Nerves are common in speaking. Even strong communicators experience them. The issue is not that nerves show up. The issue is whether the nerves take control.

Nerves often come from:

  • fear of judgment
  • fear of forgetting
  • fear of embarrassment
  • fear of not being enough

A speaker can manage nerves more effectively through preparation and repetition.

A few useful practices include:

  • preparing early
  • rehearsing aloud
  • simplifying the message
  • breathing slowly before speaking
  • focusing on service rather than self-image

Managing nerves does not mean pretending not to feel them. It means learning how to speak usefully even when they are present.
